After a review of regulations for agricultural corporations, a law was revised in 1999 so as to allow agricultural management in the form of stock corporations.
Also, the 2005 revision of The Agricultural Land Act permitted farm consolidation.
Under the revision, a transition to community farming of 20 ha or over has been vigorously promoted.
As described above, Japan's agriculture is about to go through a major change from conventional management by individual families to management by corporate bodies.
In addition, food self-sufficiency in Japan (on a caloric basis) was 40% in 1998.
As a consequence, stably securing food into the future while ensuring food safety has come to be regarded as a critical issue in Japan.
As can be seen, agriculture needs to play a role in supplying food that is essential to our lives; at the same time, it is expected to be independently profitable as a business activity.
However, agriculture is directly linked to cultural inheritance, which is difficult to appraise in economic terms, and to conservation of the environment, the foundation of our lives.
In short, the independent agricultural production and management that we aim to achieve should operate with high ethics, so as to give sufficient consideration to culture and the environment.
With the above-mentioned circumstances of the age in mind and under basic methods of thinking found in agriculture and agricultural sciences, the Saga University Graduate School of Agriculture reorganized itself in 2010 as a new educational and research institution that consists of five standard courses of study with an additional special course of study.
Worthy of note is the special course, the Program for Education on Management of Agricultural Technology, or 'MOT for Agriculture'.
It has been established in cooperation with the School of Economics and Business Administration.
By taking this special course together with one of the five standard courses, students will be trained to fully understand and learn the uniqueness of agriculture so as to become business-minded specialists with technological development skills.
We intend to foster human resources that are valuable to agriculture-related industries as well as at agricultural sites.
Adult students can also take this course for a certificate of MOT of Agriculture Specialist (certified by Saga University).
Farmers who aim to conduct agriculture under corporate bodies and business operators who are not related to agriculture can take this course for recurrent learning.
The Saga University Graduate School of Agriculture, as the sole institution in north-central Kyushu for advanced higher education and research in agriculture, aims to train students who will respond to the drastic changes in agriculture.
